Powers John’s Lane release pays tribute to the Powers distillery founded in 1791 in Dublin by James Power. The distillery ceased production in Dublin in 1976, moving production to the Midleton distillery after the consolidation of Jameson & Son, Power & Son, and Cork Distilleries to form Irish Distillers Limited (IDL) in 1966.
The Powers brand is one of the most successful Irish Whiskey brands in the 19th century. John Power & Son was the first Irish distiller to bottle its whiskey and present it as miniature bottles. The brand had two labels, a white label for independent bottlers (whisky bonders) and a gold label used by the distillery. The latter guaranteed a level of quality to the customer that Powers could not demand from the whiskey bonders.
Irish distillers created a new style, Single Pot Still, using at least 30% malted barley and at least 30% unmalted barley to lower their taxes based on the volume of malted barley used in the mash. John’s Lane is a triple distilled whiskey characterized by light texture, honey flavor profile, and a touch of spice. The unmalted barley adds sweetness to the whiskey in addition to the sweetness imparted by the Oloroso sherry.
