Teeling Blackpitts is an Irish peated whiskey produced at Teeling Distillery in the Liberties, Dublin. The original distillery dates back to 1782 when its founder Walter Teeling set up his small shop in Marrowbone Lane, just a few meters away from the current Teeling Distillery.
Blackpitts refers to an area in the Liberties where malting houses would use peat to dry the barley. In 1886 the area was known as the Golden Triangle because it housed powerhouses like John Powers & Son, George Roe & Sons, and William Jameson, John Jameson & Son, and Teeling Distillery.
The new distillery opened in 2015 (the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years) with Jack and Steven Teeling at the head of the company representing the new generation of Irish Whiskey makers in the renaissance era of Irish Whiskey. Their father, John Teeling, founded Cooley distillery in 1987, breaking the monopoly established in 1966 by the Irish Distillers Ltd. (IDL). Cooley distillery was known for its innovation and maverick style of making whiskey. The distillery challenged traditional flavor profiles in the Irish Whiskey category.
Tasting Notes for Teeling Blackpitts Peated Single Malt
Nose: Aromas of lemon, orange peel, smoke, and peat. Adding water brings up the apple aromas.
Palate: Arrival of oranges and honey developing into smoke and peat. The palate is balanced, leaving space for both citrus and peat flavors. Adding a teaspoon of water diminishes the smoke and peat, but these are still present in the experience.
Finish: Long with peat and smoke and wood spices.
Conclusion: Teeling Blackpitts is a fun whiskey that combines the sweet and citrus flavors with peat and smoke, an ideal choice for those looking for a light Irish malt with an Islay vibe.
The light and peated flavor profile brought to my mind some similarities with Ardbeg 10-Year-Old, so I tasted these side by side, but after several sips, the differences were very noticeable. Ardbeg 10-Year-Old brings out sweeter aromas and a bolder peat and smoke flavor profile, which makes sense because Teeling is triple distilled, and Ardbeg 10-Year-Old is double distilled. However, both whiskies are very enjoyable.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! 🥃
