The Valley of the Deer, also known as Glenfiddich, is a popular brand of single malt Scotch due to its versatility and approachability. The malt is a good representative of the Speyside region and the best-selling single malt in the world. However, a few premium expressions, like the 18 Year Old, 21 Year Old Gran Reserva and 23 Year Old Grand Cru, are bottled at the bare minimum alcoholic strength of 40%, leaving me disappointed.
Tasting Notes for Glenfiddich 12 Year Old
The distillery style is unmistakably aperitif-like, with hints of honey, fruits, and raisins. The 12 Year Old is the flagship of the core range. Here are the tasting notes.
Nose: Aromas of vanilla, orchard fruits, and sherry.
Palate: A sweet arrival of red apples, honey, and vanilla. There are some dried fruits like raisins and walnuts, but the dominant flavors are vanilla and apples. Water makes the malt refreshing, but too much water gives away its delicate flavors, so I prefer it neat.
Finish: Medium. Fruity and oily.
Conclusion: This whisky is a gateway single malt perfect for those getting started in the Single Malt Scotch category. The texture is light and delicate. A flavor profile with orchard fruits is ideal for palates not ready to get too complex and overwhelming.
The price is competitive with malts of the same age and interesting enough to make you want to purchase a bottle and share it with friends who are not malt heads. A benchmark for Speyside and a must-try classic if you are new to Single Malt Scotch. Slainte!
