Tasting Notes for Barrel Bourbon (Batch 031)
Batch 031 is a blend of straight Bourbon Whiskeys distilled and aged in Tennessee (undisclosed distillery), Kentucky (undisclosed distillery), and Indiana (most likely MGP).
The bourbons in this blend have aged in American white oak for 6, 7, 10, 15, and 16 years, bottled at 111.2 proof (55.6% ABV).
The blend contains a small portion of 99% corn bourbons and wheated bourbons. The rest of the bourbons have a traditional mash bill.
Nose: Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, and chocolate. Light and nice. .
Palate: A bitter flavor from the pepper and the oak. The latter dominates the palate when tasted neat. After adding one teaspoon of water, the fruit flavors improve the palate, but I can still feel the dry and bitter sensation of the oak. The alcohol level brought flavor notes that were too dry and spicy for my taste.
Finish: Long, dry and spicy.
Conclusion: Contrary to most reviews online, I do not find Barrel Bourbon Batch 031 to be a balanced blend of bourbons. The alcohol feels too strong, and the oak and spicy flavors overwhelm the experience. This blend looked interesting, but it is not my cup of tea. Surprisingly, the nose was the highlight of the experience for me. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers!
