Benromach Distillery is a distillery located in the town of Forres, Speyside. It was founded by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman in 1898. The distillery closed and opened several times from 1900 to 1938 and had several owners such as The National Distillers of America, Distillers Company Limited (the predecessor of Diageo), and United Distillers. Finally, an independent bottler from Elgin Gordon and MacPhail purchased the distillery in 1993 and re-equipped it with smaller stills to produce a rich spirit since 1998.
The style of Benromach is flowery, creamy, and fruity. Ideal for dessert or after dinner. The core range includes the following malts with these age statements:
- Benromach 10. The flagship of the brand. This malt is rich, fruity, and spicy.
- Benromach 15. Apple, smoke, and oak as the dominant flavors. I prefer this age statement over the 10-year-old.
- Benromach 21. Sherry flavor, citrus, and spicy flavors are highlights of this expression.
- All three expressions matured in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks.
Tasting Notes for Benromach Organic
Benromach Organic is aged six years in white oak (lightly charred) barrel despite not having an age statement on the label. Certified as Organic by the Soil Association, the leading certifier of organic food in the UK.
But what is Organic? These are the core principles:
- Care. Taking care of the land.
- Ecology. Work with nature, not against it. Respect the ecological systems.
- Health. Soil, plants, and animals are interconnected, and the health of one is connected to the health of the other.
- Fairness. Treat all parties in the food and farming supply chain with respect and justice.
There is no use of fusel derived fertilizers to provide nutrition to the soil and no use of pesticides.
Nose: Aromas of caramel, citrus, coffee, smoke, and malt.
Palate: Rich and fruity with caramel, malt, smoke, pepper, and a touch of smoke. A Scotch palate for sure.
Finish: Medium. Sour and spicy with some lingering notes of oak.
Conclusion: I can’t believe this malt is only six years old. The malt pulls its own weight showcasing a balance among multiple flavors that come together in harmony. Warning, this is an old-school style Scotch whisky that might not be suited for Bourbon palates. Those who enjoy traditional Scotch flavors will find great value in Benromach Organic. Slainte!
