Blue Spot Single Pot Irish Whiskey is part of the famous Spot series that started in the late 1800s when wine merchant Mitchell & Son aged Jameson whiskey in their underground cellars in Dublin. The Spot whiskies are a great introduction to the Irish Single Pot Still style currently produced at the Midleton distillery in the southern part of the island.
Now the Tasting Notes for Blue Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey
Nose: Brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon, pineapple, and sweet wine. The aromas are gentle and inviting. Unlike other whiskies at cask strength, the whisky does not kick your nose with alcohol.
Palate: A sweet and oily arrival of raisins, brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon, and sweet dessert wine. A lovely palate.
Despite the 58.9% ABV, there is no burn at all. I am surprised that a seven-year-old at high strength can taste this good. A slight touch of oak spice plays its tune in the background and complements the experience. I do not think this whiskey needs water for me.
Finish: Medium to long and full of dried fruits and toasted wood.
Conclusion: Blue Spot Irish Whiskey is a lovely dram. Despite its young age, the whiskey assembles the bourbon, sherry, and Madeira flavors beautifully. I have yet to try the Red Spot release, but I am enjoying the Spot series already. I can’t wait to try the Red Spot release. If you like Blue Spot with water, the whiskey will take it without drowning. A real treat if you can find it. Slàinte!
