Stranahan’s Diamond Peak is an American single malt made at Stranahan’s distillery located one mile south of Denver, Colorado. The Diamond Peak series is an annual release focusing on finishing single malts in different casks.
The 2022 release was finished in Irish Whiskey from Bushmills Distillery. The 2023 edition is finished in extra añejo tequila barrels from José Cuervo’s Reserva de la Familia, the most premium line of Tequilas in the Proximo Spirits portfolio. It is worth pointing out that José Cuervo and Bushmills brands are also part of the same holding company.
Diamond Peak’s second release is a 5-8 year old single malt expression (from Batch #2) matured in American oak (level 3 char) and finished for about two years in Tequila barrels and bottled at 45% ABV.
Tasting Notes for Stranahan’s Diamond Peak
Nose: Malty and nutty nose with sweet aromas of caramel typical of American oak barrels.
Palate: A creamy arrival of classic malt with a sweet flavor of caramel that transitions to more robust and intense herbal flavors from the mid-palate to the finish.
Finish: Medium. Things get fun in the finish with an explosion of pepper and agave flavors.
Conclusion: A very tasty American Single Malt that demonstrates the spirit of creating something different from mainstream (bourbon, Tennessee Whiskey, and rye) in the USA. It takes courage and conviction to make a single malt in the USA and not be compared to Scotch Whisky. Kudos to Stranahan’s Distillery. Cheers!
