Forty Creek Distillery is located in Grimsby, on Lake Ontario, taking its name from the nearby creek located only 40 miles west of Niagara Falls.
Winemaker John Hall and Master Blender Bill Ashburn founded the distillery in 1992, becoming one of the most awarded distilleries in Canada. In 2014 the Italian beverage company Campari bought Forty Creek, adding another whisky brand to its portfolio (joining Glen Grant and Wild Turkey)
Forty Creek Three Grain Harmony 2015 is the 9th Limited Release from the distillery that involved three single grains: Corn, rye, and barley. Traditionally in Canada, all grains are mashed, fermented, distilled separately, and blended to create the target flavor profile of the distillery.
According to the information in the packaging, the rye and barley grains dated back to when the distillery started operations. This Limited Release (1,500 cases/9,000 bottles) marks the first time these three stocks are combined into the blend and matured in toasted white oak.
According to a Canadian source, all limited releases of Forty Creek are variations of the Forty Creek Barrel Select (the flagship whisky of the distillery) but with a different cask finishing or aging.
Tasting Notes for Forty Creek Three Grain Harmony
Nose: A nose of fruits (corn) and baking spices (i.e., cinnamon, vanilla) typical of Canadian Whisky.
Palate: Fruits and candy. A mellow sweet arrival with vanilla, cinnamon, and some spicy note that complements the sweetness. None of the flavors are in disproportion.
Finish: Short to medium sweetness and slightly bitter in the finish, but not unpleasant.
Conclusion: I enjoyed this Canadian Whisky, which is delicate in texture. The profile is so fruity that attracted two fruit flies I did not know I had in my house.
The finish is short and disappointing because I wanted the baking spices to linger longer. The rye spice is part of the flavor profile, but I would not say that is the main actor in this movie.
Three Grain Harmony 2015 is enjoyable, but do not expect a bold fruit flavor profile like that of Bulleit Bourbon, but quite the opposite. Those who enjoy delicate and fruity whiskies will enjoy this one. Cheers!
