Glencadam is a Scottish Highlands Distillery founded by George Cooper in 1825. The distillery location is on the southeast coast of the Highlands, in the city of Brechin. Its name in Gaelic means “The glen of the wild goose”.
Recent owners include Hiram Walker (1954), Allied Domecq (2000), and Angus Dundee Distillers since 2003. Allied Domecq mothballed the distillery in 2000, with production re-starting in 2003 under the current ownership, who gave this expression the name “The Re-awakening” to highlight this fact.
Glencadam is not a brand that maintains a single malt high profile like The Macallan, Glenfiddich, or The Glenlivet. The malt was a component of blends such as Ballantine’s. However, it has a decent following among single malt fans due to its creamy unpeated fruit flavors with a delicate texture. The core range has been expanded twice with two cask-finished expressions and a 10, 15, and 21-year-old.
Tasting Notes for Glencadam 13 Year Old
A Limited Edition expression aged 13 years in ex-bourbon casks, Unchilledfiltered, without caramel coloring, and bottled at 46% ABV. This bottle is 2973 out of 3000 bottles.
Nose: Floral and fruity. Aromas of melon and vanilla.
Palate: Intense flavors of sweet fresh fruits combined with bitter and sour. A touch of salt and pepper. I find these flavors integrated, but a bit strange in a good way. The palate is creamy and delicate but does not correlate with the nose, which promises a Creme Brule and what you get is tart apples.
Finish: Medium with a bitter finish from the oak and perhaps the alcohol.
Conclusion: This delicate yet complex single malt has a great nose that cuddles you with floral, fresh fruit, and vanilla aromas. However, the palate exhibits sweet, sour, and bitter notes and could taste a little off for some palates. This malt is not a crowd-pleaser. One must spend some time separating the flavors. This malt could be a hit for those well-traveled in the Single Malt Scotch category. Slainte!
