Glengoyne distillery is located 12 miles from Glasgow. Established by George Connell in 1833 as Burnfoot distillery, it is considered one of the most picturesque distilleries in Scotland. The distillery claims in its labels “Unhurried since 1833” alluding to the slow distilling (4-5 liters per minute) that allows the formation of esters that drive a distinctive flavor profile of a dessert malt.
Glengoyne means valley of the wild geese in the Gaelic language, and it is a popular tourist attraction receiving around 50,000 visitors a year from around the world. The distillery is known for its aging in sherry but also uses ex-bourbon and American oak casks. One peculiar fact about Glengoyne is that it distills its new make in the Highlands and matures it in the warehouse across the street in the Lowlands. Nonetheless, it is considered a Highland malt.
Notes for Glengoyne 12 Year Old
Nose: Aromas of caramel, lemon, sherry, and malt.
Palate: Sweet arrival sherry developing into caramel, ginger, and a slightly dry sensation. Overall, the palate is delicate, clean, and very approachable.
Finish: Medium with the oak asserting its influence here.
Conclusion: Glengoyne 12 Year Old is an entry-level expression of the range, but do not let that fool you because the malt packs enough flavor to please whisky geeks and newbies.
This expression could easily be in the same range as Glenfiddich 15, Balvenie 12 Doublewood, but it stands out from these entry-level malts because it feels more articulate. This a great value malt for those looking for a delicious and easy-to-drink malt at an affordable price ($65). Slainte!
