Larceny Barrel Proof (Batch B522) is a wheated bourbon from Heaven Hill Distillery, which releases this expression in January, May, and September every year.
Tasting Notes for Larceny Barrel Proof
B522 was released in May of this year. The bottle does not display an age statement, but it should be around six to eight years old, bottled at 61.9% ABV. The mash bill is 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, and 12% Malted Barley.
Nose: A lovely nose of baking spices (i.e., cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove).
Palate: A full-bodied, creamy, and caramel arrival. Flavors of cinnamon and maple syrup transition into leather and dry sensation with plenty of oak spices. Adding water makes the soft wheat and pepper flavors move to the front of the line. I prefer Larceny B522 with ten drops of water. A solid bourbon palate.
Finish: Long and warm. Toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, and full of spices. Very good.
Conclusion: A flavourful, cinnamon-forward, and full-bodied bourbon. The first sip is hot, as you would expect from a barrel-strength bourbon, but the overall experience is tasty. This bourbon can easily take two to three teaspoons of water and still deliver a palate full of flavors. Drink it neat or with water, and you will enjoy it either way.
Newbies to the bourbon category might feel this expression as a bit overwhelming due to the heat from the alcohol level that packs a big punch. Nonetheless, it is worth trying, especially at $70 a bottle.
