Penelope Cigar Sessions Chapter #1 is an American Whiskey blend of Straight Bourbon, American Single Malt, and American Light Whiskey. The latter was a category introduced in the 1960s, distilled to a higher proof than standard American whiskeys (160° to 190° proof) and required to be stored in used or uncharred new oak barrels. Light Whiskey is typically used in blends to offset the flavor profile of American Malt and provide a more balanced feel.

On the label, it stated Non-Chill-Filtered to convey that congeners remain in the final product. The blend finished in French oak barrels, imparting vanilla and spice to the spirit.

Notes for Penelope Cigar Sessions American Whiskey Chapter 1

Nose: The aromas are very inviting with caramel and cinnamon leading the way. There is a hint of oak and sugar that feels very pleasant.

Palate: Creamy and light flavors of sugar, caramel, cinnamon, and oak again. A fruity delivery, but I can’t identify which one.

Finish: A medium finish with oak spices and cinnamon.

Conclusion

Here are my 2 cents. Bourbon purists will downgrade the blend because it lacks the full-bodied profile of a Booker’s Small Batch or Barrel Bourbon from Barrel Craft Spirits. Instead, it offers a balanced flavor profile that, when you think about cigars, makes you think you are going to get an amped up whiskey, but instead, you get something that speaks more to those who prefer balance over power.

This expression should be a treat for those looking for a whiskey that delivers a balance between sweet and oak. I can see why the blend pairs well with medium-bodied cigars. Expect a great delivery from this blend if you appreciate details behind the whiskey. Otherwise, you can skip it. Cheers!
